Sadly, motorbike crashes often result in serious injury including paralysis and serious leg injury. In these cases, motorbike accident claim compensation is often put towards adapting a crash victim's home to help them lead as independent a life as possible. However, an invention from New Zealand could change that and make wheelchairs a thing of the past.
Named 'Rex', two New Zealand inventors have produced what they claim to be the world's first robotic legs to help paraplegics walk again.
The inventors, who are both expatriate Scottish engineers, came up with the idea seven years ago and have spent nearly NZ$7million developing it. Inspired by the movie 'Aliens' the 38 kg bionic legs are joy stick operated and according to the company's website, offer a "realistic standing and walking alternative to wheelchairs."
When wearing the legs, the user is able to climb up and down stairs, sit, stand and step backwards, sideways and forwards. The legs have been designed to be practical, lightweight, safe and simple to use with enough power for a typical day of use.
However, the inventors are quick to point out that Rex should compliment rather than replace the user's wheelchair and is currently only suitable for manual wheelchair users who can self-transfer and operate hand controls.
At present Rex is only available in New Zealand and potential users must undergo a couple of weeks training to ensure the legs will be suitable for them. The legs are also expensive and have a price tag of NZ$150,000 (around £70, 500). However, for those currently confined to a wheelchair, this may be a small price to pay for the chance to walk again.
You can find out more about the legs from the Rex Bionics website at Rexbionics.com.
