In 2010 road safety experts voiced concerns that drastic transport sector budget cuts could result in an increase in both motorcycle crashes and the motorbike accident claim rate.
Unfortunately, news of the budget cuts tempered much of the good feeling and optimism which had been brought about by confirmation of a significant fall in motorbike deaths.
Steve Kenward chair of the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCI) spoke of the motorcycle safety challenges facing the community.
"The reported fall in motorcycle fatalities during 2009 is welcome, but we cannot be complacent about this - there are simply far too many people dying in accidents - and we still have much more work to do," he said.
Adding, "The MCI and the rest of the motorcycle community will continue to work hard to improve safety and ensure that we get full Government support for a more rounded approach to road-user safety.
"The full integration of motorcycles into mainstream transport policy and local transport plans, which the Government is now backing, can only help maintain and improve on this reduction in casualties and needs to be a key priority along with improvements to rider training delivery and participation."
However, with a 40% road safety budget cut, to be comprised of a 27% cut in the revenue grant and a 100% cut in the capital grant, due to come into effect in 2010/11 there were concerns that all the good work was about to be undone.
A leading no win, no fee motorbike accident claim expert commented, "There is always a danger that budget cuts could end up costing more than they save, whether this is because of the eventual need for wholesale repair works, the costs of accident litigation or efficiency problems caused by an inadequate road network."
