A motor bike crash can be a traumatic experience, and that is including even those accidents which do not result in riders suffering severe personal injuries such as brain or spinal cord damage.
Riders are the most vulnerable of all motorists, yet they are largely the most environmentally-friendly; this fact leaves the government facing a seemingly paradoxical question: how do they reduce the motor bike crash rate while also increasing the number of powered-two wheelers on Britain's roads?
In 2010 nearly 7,000 riders on the Motor Cycle News database of motorcycling community members attempted to answer this question. The consensus was surprisingly clear.
Nearly 50% of all respondents indicated their belief that improving road conditions across the UK must be viewed as the government's priority, an understandable response considering both the condition of some roads, where potholes pose a serious hazard, and the way many have been designed without viewing riders' needs as a priority.
The second most important consideration, according to the surveys' respondents, was a need to improve drivers' awareness of motorcycles on the roads, again understandable considering the role driver inattention plays in many car-motorcycle accidents.
And, if the government really is serious about reducing green house gas emissions by replacing many "drives" with "rides", it should note the belief of nearly 60% of motorcyclists who say that better road conditions and safety features is the fillip many people need to switch from four-wheeled to two-wheeled motoring.
Steve Kenward, CEO for the Motorcycle Industry Association commented, "Riders' views are important and we are all aware that better roads and an improved road infrastructure will improve road-safety and encourage more riders onto the roads.
"As bikes can help to reduce congestion, reduce pollution and reduce journey times for all road users improving road conditions can only be a positive step. It would also demonstrate a commitment to fully integrating powered two-wheelers into transport policy and planning."
