Moped accident claim rate swollen by young riders

A moped is the first motorised vehicle many young people in the UK will own. It is easy to see why: mopeds are cheap to insure, relatively easy to ride and be licensed for, a useful mode of urban transport and, tellingly, affordable. However, they also make young riders vulnerable road users, a fact reflected both in Department for Transport accident figures and the disproportionate number of moped accident claims involving claimants under 30.

This reality is supported by research from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Astonishingly, IAM figures show that sixteen-year-old boys are more likely to die in a moped accident than when walking, cycling or travelling by car.

Overall in the UK, around 250 sixteen-year-old boys die in moped-related accidents each year, leading to accusations from some concerned parties that the government has been too lax in its application of safety and license testing requirements.

The IAM report, 16 The dangerous age for moped riders, examined around 3,500 moped crashes over a six-year period and found that insufficient road safety and riding knowledge of sixteen-year-olds was a significant factor in their overrepresentation in moped crashes.

Furthermore, there were also a high number of moped accident claims involving 16-year-olds for accidents occurring at 30mph or less.

IAM's director of policy and research commented, "This is a forgotten issue. 16-year-old boys are being allowed to ride mopeds with too little practical understanding of safe roadcraft or defensive riding skills, leaving them particularly vulnerable.

"The Government is currently reviewing driver training and testing. In the light of our report, we believe that the way 16 year-olds are trained and licensed to ride a moped should also be reviewed."
