A motorcycle accident claim for full injury compensation

Motorcyclists are already among the most vulnerable of road users, so it is essential that they take all necessary safety precautions to avoid becoming involved in a crash and the added trauma of a motorcycle accident claim.

One aspect of safety is ensuring the integrity of tyres. However, in 2011 a survey by the United Kingdom's leading tyre safety organisation, TyreSafe, revealed that not enough riders were taking adequate steps to maintain the safety of their tyres.

The findings of the survey were supported by Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) statistics which showed that nearly 5% of bikes failed their MOT because of defective tyres.

Tragically, this is a reality that is borne out on the UK's roads, and sometimes with fatal consequences – Department of Transport figures show that in 2009 there were 82 serious motorbike crashes in which underinflated, defective or illegal tyres were at least a partial cause of the incident.

In such cases, riders are unable to receive 100 per cent compensation from a motorcycle accident claim. This is because, with tyre condition as a contributory factor, the rider is considered partially liable in the eyes of the law.

Tyresafe comments, "To help avoid becoming another road casualty statistic, riders should check their tyres at least once a week. Particular attention should also be paid before the first ride of the season, especially if their motorbike has been stored in the garage over the winter months. Dealers supporting bike tyre safety month will be delighted to carry out the checks for free for motorcyclists who are unsure about how to do it themselves."
