With around 28% of motorbike crashes being caused by riders losing control of their powered-two-wheelers, it is worth considering that in such cases the responsibility for making a motorcycle accident claim will fall solely on the rider and, as such, may lead to a rise in the cost of his or her premium at the next policy renewal.
However, with around 40% of accidents being caused by the actions of other motorists, it follows that in these instances it is these motorists who will face the possibility of a significantly more costly premium at the time of renewal.
And, despite the fact that car drivers and other motorists are responsible for such a high proportion of crashes involving motorcyclists, the perception remains, even after an accident, that riders are an "irresponsible lot of speedsters" so must be the ones to blame.
Lincoln University associate professor Charley Lamb explains the post-accident rationalization of some motorists. "Drivers report they took a quick look, did not see the rider and, ergo, the motorcyclist was speeding," he says.
In fact, there are some, including the Australasian Institute of Motorcycle Studies (AIMS), who believe that this prejudiced view of motorcyclists may be compromising the safety of riders and actually leading to accidents occurring.
AIMS believe that, in turn, this may lead to riders becoming defensive, ultimately leading to an adversarial relationship between riders and other road users.
While many agree with this analysis, it becomes controversial when it seeks to understand the relationship between some riders and the police.
Professor Lamb explains believes the "red- mist attitude between police and some riders, which leads to police chases, has to stop".
"If riders are being hit by professional, trained police drivers, what hope do we have from the average Joe Blow?"
