There are many ways to go about improving the safety of motorcycling and none can be considered in isolation. Here in the UK, the capital, London, has proved a great innovator in motorcycling safety, as is evidenced by the 2010 decision to allow riders to use bus lanes. However, despite this trial proving a success in many aspects, in others it was perceived to have failed; not least because it resulted in an increase in the motorbike accident claim rate for incidents in which cars pull out of side roads and collide with motorbikes.
It was this fact that led Transport for London together with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to launch a television safety awareness campaign in order to remind car drivers that motorcycles are entitled to use 418 bus lanes in London and that they are, of course, much more difficult to spot, particularly from a distance.
At the time, Kulvear Ranger, transport advisor to the Mayor of London, commented, "The last Trial of allowing bikers to use bus lanes showed some real successes - fears there would be more collisions between cyclists and motorcyclists proved unfounded and road users who were surveyed supported the idea.
"However, it also revealed an increase in collisions between motorbikes and cars turning in or out of side roads on the bus lanes. Safety is clearly our top priority so through this new Trial we want to make sure we do everything possible to keep all road users safe.
"I want all road users to respect each other so they can share the roads and help everyone to stay safe as they make their way around London."
On receiving news of the campaign, no win, no fee specialist YouClaim's motorbike accident claim spokesperson added his voice.
"Everyone at YouClaim, including our personal injury lawyers, welcome the decision to raise invaluable awareness of the road safety challenges presented by having motorcycles share bus lanes with buses and bicycles."
He added, "Although we are a national accident compensation provider, our firm has a strong London presence, so many on our panel have firsthand experience not only of the law affecting motorcyclists but also of riding in London's bus lanes; it is an issue we feel very strongly about."
