To avoid a motorcycle accident claim it is a good idea to get as much road safety advice as you can.
Although road safety laws in the US vary greatly to those in the UK, a motorbike rider with the Idaho Falls Police Department has offered some good riding advice to all bikers.
Ken Brown said, "Assume the person next to you, or who's pulling out, doesn't see you."
He suggests motorcycle riders should consider themselves invisible at all times and that riders should be careful in how they ride and mindful of what they wear.
Visibility, or at times ‘invisibility', appears to be a major factor in many motorcycle accidents, as many road users have proclaimed that they didn't see the motorbike until it was too late. If a motorcyclist, therefore, believes he can't be seen he is less likely to take risks and will consider the reactions - or non-reactions – of car drivers and pedestrians around him.
Brown suggests a leather jacket should be worn, particularly those with built in padding or armour for areas such as shoulders and elbows, and this will help to avoid road (or gravel) rash. However, as many jackets are made in black it is advisable to wear high-visibility equipment such as a tabard or reflective belt and cross strap.
The Idaho police officer particularly recommends the wearing of good quality gloves.
"If you fall, the first thing that's going to come to the ground are your hands," Brown said.
Motorcycle crash helmets in the US
In the state of Idaho over-18s have the option not to wear a crash helmet, but many serious bike riders in the US advocate their use at all times.
Tim Downs – a rider of over 20 years – said, "What could be a minor accident in cars could be a major life-threatening accident on a motorcycle."
So, to avoid injury and the subsequent motorcycle accident claim, Downs recommends that riders should always believe they have a target drawn on them and that when a rider thinks everybody is aiming at them, they will ride a little more carefully.
