London's motorbike accident prevention trial is at risk

In 2009, the hard work of motorcycling campaigners in London finally paid off with the introduction of an 18-month trial that allows riders to use bus lanes in the capital. And, if the move proves to be a success in reducing London's motorbike accident rate, it is hoped that the similar measures will be adopted throughout the rest of the UK.

Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor or London's director of transport policy, described the trial as an "incredibly valuable opportunity" and added, "Ensuring motorcyclists can use the capital's roads safely is a key part of the mayor's aim of reducing congestion and emissions on London's roads by encouraging greater numbers of people to take to two wheels.

However, concerns have been expressed that the cycling lobby, which has long voiced its opposition to the trial, will sideline the move.

Craig Carey-Clinch, from Rowan Public Affairs (RPA), a motorcycle focused consultancy group, comments, "TfL have already received large numbers of submissions from cyclists opposing motorcycles in bus lanes.

"We don't want to see a situation where 5,000 cyclists have protested and 200 motorcyclists shown support. It's this kind of thing that would shift the political balance against us.

"We risk losing the scheme at the end of the 18-month period unless the motorcycle world demonstrates widespread support for the measure.

"Failure of the scheme in London will be likely to cripple our chances of getting motorcycles in bus lanes elsewhere.

"Cycle lobby groups are motivated and determined. They see denying motorcycles access to bus lanes as a number one key goal. They have a strong and well-motivated campaigning local network.

"They will do all they can to achieve their goal. Unless we respond to this, we risk seeing this hard won concession denied to us after the experimental period has finished."

Motorcyclists who believe that the trial is beneficial in protecting their safety and reducing the incidence of motorbike accidents can express their support by completing Transport for London's survey, which can be found here.
