In many motorbike accidents, serious injuries are inflicted on the riders because they are protected solely by the clothing that they are wearing. Specialist protective clothing, headgear and footwear have all been developed, but whatever a motorbike rider wears, he or she does not have the same level of protection afforded to car drivers and passengers.
Airbags for motorbike riders
Early attempts at incorporating airbags into upper body clothing to protect a rider's chest, neck and lower back in the event of a crash were widely derided by the biking world. They took too long to inflate, weighed too much, were ugly to look at and hindered riding style. Pioneering manufacturers have either gone out of business or have stopped making the products.
However, in 2008 a new jacket was launched at the NEC Bike Show in Birmingham and received better reception than previous models.

The jacket's inflation system is linked to the bike by a coiled cord; in the event of an accident and the rider leaving the machine, the "key" is pulled out and the CE certified air cushion system is activated. A pressurised canister of CO2 inflates in less than 0.3 seconds to protect the neck, coccyx and rib cage from impact with the road or other vehicle and also protects against possible crushing injury from the motorbike itself.
Re-useable safety device
Unlike a motorcycle crash helmet, the Point Two airbag jacket is reusable after a motorbike accident. A minute or so after inflation the chambers will automatically deflate. A new CO2 canister can be fitted and the vest can be used again for further protection. The whole inflation system can be removed from the vest so that it can be washed.
