Mesothelioma can be a difficult cancer to diagnose according to Cancer Research UK. As the general symptoms are so similar to those exhibited in more common diseases, mesothelioma may not be a doctor’s first consideration. Symptoms such as weight loss, fever, coughing and abdominal pain may be confused with any number of illnesses. In addition many different types of cell make up a mesothelioma tumour so when a pathologist looks at the cells under microscope it can be hard to determine whether the cells are mesothelioma cells.
In order to obtain the correct diagnosis the patient must inform their doctor that they have had contact with asbestos in the past. To establish whether the patient has mesothelioma several diagnostic tests will be carried out. There are a few signs of mesothelioma which can alert the physician to its presence.
