Mesothelioma – Diagnosis of the disease, x-ray and tissue removal

Mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose, with many of the symptoms similar to other illnesses. For example, the symptoms of a cough, cold and weight loss could be considered no more than a common cold. If however a patient has had exposure to asbestos in the past it is important to seek medical attention. Several diagnostic procedures can then be performed.

X-Ray
If a patient is suspected to have mesothelioma then a chest x-ray is carried out to look for the various warning signs. It may show abnormal thickening of the pleura, mineral residue known as pleural calcifications, lowering of the spaces between the lobes of the lungs known as lung fissures, and fluid in the pleural space, the tiny area between the two layers of the pleura. The normal amount of fluid in the pleura may have increased, thus arousing concerns about mesothelioma.

Removal of Tissue
A thoracoscopy will also determine presence of the disease. This is where a tissue sample is removed for analysis. A telescope-like instrument connected to a video camera, called a thoracoscope, is inserted through a small cut into the chest. The doctor can see the tumour through the thoracoscope and can use special forceps to take a tissue biopsy. A larger sample of the tissue can be removed by opening the chest cavity during surgery. Sometimes the entire tumour will be removed. Another method of tissue removal is via the mouth. A bronchoscopy is where a lighted tube is inserted through the mouth into the trachea and into the bronchi. Abnormal tissue can be taken out and tested.
