Paying for medical treatment after a holiday accident

Each year, around 1300 Britons die either in holiday accidents or as a result of crime abroad, whilst thousands more are injured. The types of accidents and illnesses that are most frequently experienced by holidaymakers include slips and falls, food poisoning, road accidents and water sports accidents.

compensation claim, holiday accident Many of these injuries and illnesses need to be treated as quickly as possible in order to minimise the discomfort of the casualty. However, the cost of medical treatment abroad can easily run into hundreds or even thousands of pounds unless there is some protection against the costs or a simple means of reclaiming the money by making a holiday accident claim.

Protection from medical costs abroad
In the past, the E111 was the document that many people associated with free medical treatment abroad. However, on the 1st January 2006, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) was brought in as a replacement.

The EHIC ensures that you can get medical care in the European Economic Area (the EU, plus Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein). Switzerland also has an agreement with the EU that allows the EHIC to be used.

This grants access to public healthcare facilities and allows either free or discounted medical care. Under this scheme you will be able to get treatment for injuries suffered, for example those suffered in a holiday accident, or illnesses, such as pre-existing conditions.

The country in which you are being treated determines whether the treatment will be totally free or available at a discount. For example, in France, you would get a 70% discount on medical treatment but would still be still responsible for paying the remainder. This contrasts with the Netherlands, in which treatment is nearly always free, although prescriptions are not.

Please see www.ehic.org.uk for more information.

Travel insurance can be bought to give protection on top of your EHIC. Around 80% of travellers are thought to get travel insurance before they go on their holidays. This cover is vital if you are travelling outside of the EU and advisable for travelling within it. Possessing it certainly helps ease the holiday accident claim process.

If you have travel insurance as well as an EHIC, you will be able to get treatment in private surgeries, clinics and hospitals if you have a holiday accident. Depending on the type of insurance you buy, you will be covered for certain types of illness and injury. It is worthwhile checking the details of what your insurance will cover you for, especially if you plan on doing any high-risk sports whilst away as adventure sport mishaps make up a disproportionate number of no win, no fee claims for holiday accident compensation.
