Case study - Norwalk virus on a cruise ship
In 2004, the couple, both 43, took their children, aged 8 and 11, on a two-week Caribbean cruise that set off from Florida. Unfortunately, three days into the cruise they came down with sickness and diarrhoea.
The illness was widespread and many other people, both passengers and crew, on the cruise ship also became unwell. Samples were taken in which a Norwalk virus was detected.
The family suffered badly from the effects of the cruise ship virus and had to stay in their cabin for almost a week, totally ruining their holiday.
They made a complaint to the cruise ship company but it was not taken seriously and the family were quickly dismissed. Upset at the uncaring attitude of the company, the family decided to make a holiday compensation claim.
