Dogs that bite. Claiming compensation for a dog bite.

When considering dog bites we must be aware that any dog has the potential to attack a human. Dogs by their nature do not like to be disturbed when they are eating, chewing or with their puppies. They become agitated when fearful and can become upset in the same way that humans can. They sometimes react by lashing out and perhaps biting the person who is causing their anxiety or anger. It is more likely that a dog will attack a person if they are not properly socialised. Socialising a dog means introducing it to all kinds of people in order to get it ‘used’ to this kind of day to day interaction.
Dogs that bite
Some particularly dangerous dogs or dogs that can be overly aggressive without proper training include the following:
- Rottweilers are calm but powerful, they are protective of its family and not overly friendly to strangers. Without training they can be hostile.
- Pit bull terrier, breed for physical strength and aggression. This has created a dog unsuitable for life in the modern community. The Dangerous Dogs Act, 1991, (DDA) a UK legislation passed has made it illegal to import, breed, or sell pit bull terriers. Further, they must be registered, kept muzzled and on a lead when in public places, and, in order to ensure the type dies out, they must also be neutered.
- German shepherds or Alsatian are used as police dogs because of their courage. Large, very strong dogs.
Other dogs banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991:
- Japanese Tosa - Large and powerful
- Dogo Argentino - Very strong muscular dog
- Fila Braziliero - Heavy boned dog
There is a maximum penalty of £5,000 and or 6 months imprisonment for illegal possession of one of the aforementioned dogs. They are prohibited as it is considered that they have been bred specifically as fighting dogs.
It is important to remember that even though there are some dogs that bite because they are bred to be aggressive, all breeds of dog have the capacity to attack a human.
