Dog bite treatment

If you have been bitten by a dog it is important that you get the correct treatment as soon as possible to help prevent infection. Dog bites account for around 60-90% of all bites in the UK ; this is followed by cat bites which account for 5-18% of bites and human bites which account for 4-23%. The first priority for dog bite treatment is to wash the wound. A sterile saline solution can be bought from any pharmacy and should be applied to the wound to clean out grains of dirt and bacteria that can lead to infection. If the wound is bleeding then pressure should be applied to stem the flow of blood. The wound should then be covered up with a bandage or plaster.

Injuries may be more extensive than they appear. Sometimes puncture wounds can be quite deep if inflicted by a long tooth. Some signs of infection to look out for are redness, swelling and tenderness. If there are signs of infection then a course of antibiotics may be needed. They may also be taken as a preventative measure before any signs of infection have presented themselves. Your GP will prescribe these for you if they are needed.

If the injury is on the face, hands or feet then medical advice should be sought unless the wound is small and superficial. Stitches may be needed if the cut is serious, this will require a visit to your doctor or local accident and emergency department.

It is also important to consider immunisation against tetanus as part of dog bite treatment and if the bite occurred abroad then possibly treatment for the potentially fatal rabies.
