By far the most common injuries to the ankle are strains and sprains. Prompt medical attention is required for all ankle injuries, just because you can move your foot, it doesn't mean that it cannot be broken or fractured. Applying ice wrapped in a towel will prevent some of the swelling and ease the pain.
