RTA compensation and the 2009 Annual Road Safety Expo

Road traffic accidents continue to remain one of the foremost causes of premature deaths in the UK while RTA compensation is behind the majority of UK personal injury claims. As such, events such as the Annual Road Safety Expo are of paramount importance in establishing strategies to both protect the safety of British road users and reduce the financial burden of road accident litigation.

2009's Road Safety Expo was no different. In the lead-up to the Expo, RoadSafe's director commented, "This Expo comes at a most important time on the eve of the first global transport ministers' conference where there will be a call for a decade of action to save five million lives across the world."

He also indicated that 2009's Expo would be focusing on the safety potential of technological advances. "With Britain aiming to be the best in the world, all professionals will need to be there to hear what technology can do to achieve this important goal and learn about some of the world's most innovative interventions," he said.

But, despite the promise offered by technological advances such as vehicular crash-avoidance systems, anti-whiplash headrests and intelligent road design, the Expo also looked at more traditional methods of improving road safety such as reducing the speed limit on rural roads.

However, John Dawson, chairman of EuroRap warned, "Lower speed limits alone will not solve the problem. Our A-road network is littered with known, avoidable risks that kill: junctions that are not laid out to minimum safety standards; overtaking zones rife with hazards; and dangerous objects within metres of the road edge.

"Until the road environment is safe, speed limits must be compatible with the features of the road, and it is time for local authorities to set limits that road users can trust, and which act as a clear gauge to safety."

And, as the no win, no fee solicitors who specialise in rta compensation know all too well, there can be no easy solutions when the causes of accidents are so complex and so various. Joanne Hill, director of the Road Safety Foundation, explains, "Eliminating deaths on our roads is a shared responsibility: safe roads must mean drivers, vehicle manufacturers and road authorities all accept their responsibility."
