The introduction of headrests as part of the seating in all vehicles was heralded as a big breakthrough in the reduction of driver and passenger injuries and a commensurate lessening of car accident compensation claims.
Headrests play a large part in preventing and minimising brain, neck and spinal cord injuries in a car crash and can reduce the whiplash effect of sudden braking. However, a headrest which has not been adjusted and does not support the head correctly can in itself cause an injury.
This situation is most likely to arise where a number of drivers use a particular vehicle. They usually alter the driving position because it is obviously uncomfortable and difficult to use the car's controls without adjustment but forget about the headrest.
According to a study by the Insurance Bureau of Canada, only 14% of drivers used a headrest in the correct position. Drivers, and passengers, can be injured when a car is travelling as slowly as 10mph unless they are using a seatbelt and headrest in the optimal positions.
Check whether your headrest is correctly aligned:
The top of the headrest should be in a straight line with the top of your head;
The centre of the headrest should be slightly above the top of your ears;
The distance between the headrest and the back of your head should be between five and ten centimetres.
Headrests can help to prevent many serious injuries in a vehicle crash but if you have suffered an injury through an accident which was not your fault you may be entitled to make a personal injury damages claim to recompense you.
