Car accident injury compensation can be claimed if you are in a car accident that was not your fault. A collision with a car which has jumped the traffic lights is a good example of this as the fault would lie with the other driver. Light jumping is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious collisions.
In Dubai, drivers caught jumping the lights, either by a camera or by a policeman, face having their car confiscated for a week as well as facing a hefty fine for the offence. Whilst in Britain the penalties seem less severe – usually three points and a £60 fine, for a driver who already has points on their licence, this could lead to disqualification from driving. This could also mean the loss of the offender's job and the means of their income.
However, compared with the possible consequences for other motorists struck by a car that has jumped the lights, a few penalty points and a fine just doesn't compare. For the devastation that jumping a set of lights can cause, the few seconds that it might save can never be worth it.
The case of a British artist killed in New York by a taxi jumping the lights only too clearly highlights how dangerous 'light jumping' is. The 26-year-old had been crossing the road in the city when she was hit by a taxi and thrown into the path of another oncoming car. Sadly the woman did not survive the collision.
Back in the UK, more measures are being put in place to reduce the growing number of motorists trying to get away with running red lights. While many busy junctions have red light cameras which will pick up on drivers who fail to stop at the lights, quieter junctions often have nothing to monitor the lights and simply rely on passing police cars and the driver's expectation for there to be a camera.
A community in Leicestershire has set up their own campaign to help prevent people jumping traffic lights in their local area. This came after a survey of local drivers revealed that many people regularly drove through red lights when they were in a hurry because they knew there were no cameras to catch them. Extra cameras have since been installed in the worst areas for 'light running' to help prevent this dangerous practice.
Running a red light is extremely dangerous and will often result in a traffic collision. Traffic lights are put in a place for a reason, not to simply aggravate motorists.
If you have been in a car accident that resulted from another driver jumping a red light, you may be able to make a compensation claim.
