"Cash for crash" scammers and the damage done by fake car accidents

After a series of prosecutions and convictions in 2009 of perpetrators of 'cash for crash' car accident fraud a media law solicitor commented in a blog on the MailOnline website that such scams were "more akin to theft than fraud".

The scammers would routinely cause a crash by braking hard in front of an unsuspecting motorist, sometimes having wantonly disabled their brake lights so as to increase the chances of a crash; then, once hit from behind, would pursue compensation for personal injuries that were non-existent.

The solicitor spoke of the general abhorrence which should be felt for anything (or anyone perhaps in this case) which makes it harder for law abiding individuals to obtain redress for personal injury accidents.

He also suggested that the four and a half year sentence for one of the car accident fraud ringleaders seemed "astonishingly light" as his crime was not merely committed against the faceless insurance companies who paid out around £12 million in compensation for the faked injuries, but committed, more shockingly, against car insurance buyers like you and I who will ultimately foot the bill for these payouts in the form of increased car insurance premiums.

If you are involved in a car accident in which another person claims to be injured and yet you feel that there is something strange or questionable about the circumstances of the collision you should alert your insurer immediately and take their advice. If the perpetrators have been at all threatening or their behaviour untoward in any way, it may also be prudent to report it to the police.
