Driving at night – safety tips

Driving at night can be quite daunting especially if you are a new and inexperienced driver or you have to drive on badly lit country lanes. Many people think mistakenly that they can driver faster at night because there are less people on the roads. This is a mistake because statistics show that 25% of all accidents happen between 4pm and 9pm when it is dark and during winter time the overall accident rate shoots up.

Why it is more dangerous to drive at night
Around 90% of a driver’s ability to react is based on what they can see ahead of them. Vision is extremely important when driving as being able to predict the road surface and any obstacles in the way means the difference between avoiding an accident and possibly being seriously injured. Vision is seriously affected at night, all aspects of sight are affected from peripheral vision to colour recognition.

What you can do to stay safe
There are a few measures you can take to make driving in the dark less dangerous. As vision is so important being able to see properly should be your priority at all times.

  • Make sure you have your eyes tested regularly to find out if your sight has deteriorated at all. If you wear glasses or contact lenses your prescription may change over time
  • Keep the windscreen clean at all times, inside and out. Keep screen wipes in the car and make sure that you use them if the car gets dirty
  • Make sure that the lights on your car work properly before you set out
  • Use main beam when you can but only if there is no one ahead of you that could be dazzled
  • If you are dazzled pull over if you can and take a couple of minutes until you feel better
  • Always drive with caution at night. If you have to drive on poorly lit roads then take extra care around corners and always be ready to stop suddenly
