Passengers can be a dangerous distraction

Using a phone, eating, or carrying out other activities behind the wheel can be dangerous. Similarly, if a motorist communicates with passengers and suffers distraction; he or she may cause a traffic accident. If you were involved in a vehicle collision which was not your fault, and you were adversely affected, you should seek the services of an experienced car crash solicitor.

A study, published in 2012 by the Automobile Association of America's Foundation for Traffic Safety, showed teenage motorists who have other young passengers in their vehicle are more at risk of dying in a car accident than those who drive alone.

The research showed a 16 or 17-year-old motorist is 44% more likely to die in a vehicle collision if they are carrying someone under the age of 21. The risk substantially increases if he or she has two, three or four young passengers in their car.

However, if a teenage motorist drives with a person over the age of 35, he or she is 62% less likely to die in a vehicle collision.

Although it seems younger drivers are more likely to get distracted by teenage passengers, every motorist must stay focused when behind the wheel.

In 2007, the George Institute for International Health stated motorists with passengers are 60% more likely to experience a vehicle collision than those who drive alone.

Although adult passengers can sometimes assist the driver in making important road-related decisions, they can also be distracting.

When possible, a motorist should not converse with other people while driving. Instead, they should reduce the chances of suffering distraction by:

  • Giving a passenger an important task, such as navigation;

  • Only talking about topics which are not emotionally charged;

  • Providing passengers with music, books or other distractions which do not interfere with driving; and

  • Only attending to the needs of passengers when pulled over in a safe location.

If a driver finds they are unable to concentrate when behind the wheel, he or she should pull over in a safe location, refocus, and take appropriate steps to prevent themselves from suffering distraction again.
