Road accidents, youclaim.co.uk

BBC car crash map is very illuminating

In December 2011, the BBC published some very interesting data, reports, videos and pictures relating to personal injury car accidents on UK roads.

Perhaps the most arresting of the data posted was a set of time-lapse crash maps which highlighted each individually recorded car accident, which caused an injury, over a 12-year period.

The main image on the site looked a bit like a road map of Great Britain, until you read that the light specks on the map were the location of every single one of the reported 2,396,750 road traffic accidents which caused a casualty.

Unsurprisingly, major conurbations were lit brightly as these are the places where car accidents are most frequent.

Also on the page was a video which animated the data to show where and when the road crashes happened from Monday to Sunday. It was interesting to see that London remained lit more or less constantly, night and day, proving that personal injury car accidents in the capital are happening round-the-clock.

On other pages there were further statistics regarding car accidents in Britain and some of them were startling. The website stated that Britain had an enviable record on reducing road casualties over a number of years adding that fatalities, for example, had reduced by almost half in a ten-year period.

Yet, five people die on British roads every day.

Police road accident records for 2010 showed that there were 1,850 deaths, 22,660 people suffered serious personal injuries and 184,138 people were injured lightly.

However, police representatives suggested that these figures were highly under-reported and a more realistic figure for those either killed or seriously injured in car accidents annually is likely to be closer to 730,000.
