Car accident claim – what to do following an accident
Car accidents are one of the main causes of personal injury in the UK and every year thousands of people make a car accident claim. If you have been involved in a car accident you should try to do the following:
- If any person or animal has been hurt or any vehicle or property has been damaged in the car accident, then by law you must stop
- Get the names, addresses and telephone numbers of any drivers, passengers or pedestrians involved in the car accident. You should also ask the drivers of other cars involved for the name of their car insurance company and policy number
- If there are any witnesses to the accident you should also ask for their contact details
- If possible, take some photographs of the accident scene
- Sketch a diagram of the accident scene. The diagram should illustrate:
- The position of the vehicles involved both before and after the accident
- Speeds
- Distances
- The road layout
- Road signs
- Any obstructions to your and other road users' views
- Where the witnesses were standing
- If anyone was injured or property damaged, by law you must show your Certificate of Motor Insurance to the police or anyone else involved in the accident
- Regardless of who you believe was at fault, never admit liability for an accident or offer to make a payment for any damage cause
