Types of brain injury

Brain injuries can occur as a result of a road traffic accident, a trip, fall or violent attack.
Most injuries are a result of bruising, tearing or bleeding of the brain tissue. Damage to the brain may occur at the time of injury or develop afterwards due to swelling or further bleeding. It is not uncommon for patients to suffer more than one type of brain injury. Here are some different types of brain injury:

Skull fracture
This is when the bone that surrounds the brain is broken. This could happen as a result of falling off a ladder in an accident at work. These fractures often repair on their own but surgery may be required if the brain tissue has been damaged.

Contusion or concussion
Generally, this is a minor injury that will not need surgery. A contusion can be the result of direct impact to the head such as being hit with a baseball bat or hitting the car windscreen in a car accident. It is a bruise or bleeding on the brain which may cause a short loss of consciousness. Headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and problems with memory and concentration are common symptoms.

Coup-Contrecoup
These are contusions that occur at more than one place in the brain. Damage can occur at the site of impact and on the opposite side of the brain. For example the impact of hitting the road in a bicycle accident may cause the brain to slam against the other side of the skull.
