Women with tokophobia may choose to give birth by elective caesarean

In an incident of birth injury, a birth injury lawyer is frequently consulted in order to claim compensation, however, the potential for birth injury puts some women off giving birth naturally altogether.

Tokophobia, the fear of childbirth, is gaining wider recognition and more women suffering from the phobia are choosing to give birth by caesarean. .

Tokophobia usually roots from a traumatic childhood experience relating to birth, often triggered through media drama, films of childbirth and stories of birth. The more the sufferer thinks about childbirth, the more terrified she becomes.

Many women's fear of childbirth prevents them from having children altogether. In October 2007 actress Helen Mirren revealed that tokophobia was the real reason behind her failing to start a family. Nonetheless, lots of women with tokophobia still go ahead with a pregnancy.

If a mother can let go of her phobia during pregnancy using relaxation and breathing techniques, she may be able to go ahead with a natural birth. However, if the mother remains stressed, her uterus is likely to tense up as she approaches labour, causing her further anxiety and long, painful contractions.

Pregnant women who feel that there is no chance of them overcoming their fear may choose to have an elective caesarean. Women still have to suffer the ordeal of having an operation which also carries many risks, but it can seem less traumatic than having a natural birth.

However, an elective caesarean is often perceived as a controversial decision because many women believe that vaginal birth is the best and safest way to give birth. Mothers who choose a C-section in advance of having their baby can be frowned upon by other women who have had natural births themselves.

For women who suffer from tokophobia, an elective caesarean can be a solution for their greatest fear, creating a huge sense of achievement for women who may have once thought that they were never going to be able to have children.
