Iron supplement birth accident warning
As soon as you find out that you are carrying a little person inside of you it is important that you look after yourself fully. That not only means eating properly but also making sure that you have all the vitamins and minerals that you and your baby need.
Taking care of yourself from the onset is the way to give your baby the best start in life and guard it against preventable birth accidents and injuries. However, pregnant women are now being warned that they should resist from taking iron supplements unless they are suffering from anaemia.
A study discovered that women who took iron supplements during their pregnancy when they didn't need it were more likely to suffer from high blood pressure and deliver babies who are small for their gestational age (SGA). This could of course cause further complications as a mother with high blood pressure could find herself in trouble during delivery and a birth accident could occur.
Taking iron supplements can increase the risk of copper and zinc deficiency in women, according to researchers from Tarbiat Modarres University in Tehran, Iran who studied 727 women during their pregnancies and for six weeks after birth.
Professor Saedeh Ziaei concluded, "The SGA birth rate and the number of women with hypertension disorder were higher in the women who received iron supplementation in comparison to the control group."
Editor-in-chief of BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, where the research was published, warned, "Anaemia in women is often associated with low birth weight and pre-term births but that does not mean that women should be popping iron pills, or any vitamin pills indiscriminately, to prevent poor pregnancy outcomes.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has advised that it is preferable for pregnant women to get iron naturally from foods such as oat and wheat bran, dark green vegetables and red meat rather than taking supplements in order to decrease the chances of a birth accident happening.
