Birth injury help for partners from the BTA

A difficult birth that results in a birth injury is a traumatic experience for everyone involved. Much has been written about the post-natal experiences of the mother, but for the father/partner the experience will have its own consequences.

The Birth Trauma Association (BTA) advises that life with a mother who has had a difficult birth can be upsetting and frustrating. The partner would have been, in most cases, the only person who shared the terrible experience and may have been the only person she felt she could fully trust in the situation. This can lead to various emotional and physical difficulties, and fathers have documented many feelings of trauma, alienation and guilt.

In short, the partner may well experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in a similar way to the mother. In many cases fathers feel as if there is no-one to turn to, or that not having actually given birth they should not be experiencing the feelings that they do.

Testimonials from fathers who experienced traumatic births include accounts of alienation from the baby and/or mother, feelings of letting the mother down and of feeling in some way responsible for the birth injury.

However, the BTA advise fathers to seek help in the same way that the mother would. If they are experiencing symptoms of depression, such as anxiety, insomnia or irreconcilable anger they should go to their GP.

The BTA website offers support advice for parents and loved ones involved in a difficult birth and much of the advice for mothers holds the same relevance for fathers. There are father's testimonials and contacts for men who wish to contact other men who have experienced traumatic deliveries and birth injury.
