Every birth injury medical negligence claimant will have emotional needs

For any woman who experiences the trauma of her child suffering a birth injury during its delivery, it is likely that the memory will live with her forever. Aside from the practical business of making vital life adjustments and making any necessary medical negligence claims, addressing the issue of the trauma itself will be one of the most pressing concerns.

Fortunately, there are organisations out there that are equipped to help meet the emotional and psychological needs of the women and their families who are still living through the aftershocks of a traumatic delivery or birth injury.

The Birth Trauma Association
The Birth Trauma Association (BTA) helps some of the 10,000 women a year who develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to cope and come to terms with their situations.

Set up in 2004, the BTA is a very representative organisation, comprised not of doctors, counsellors or psychologists but of the kinds of mothers they aim to help, all of whom have some experience of trauma post-birth.

The BTA outline their aims as follows:

The BTA believes that, historically, the post birth needs of women have often been neglected, something which creates a climate to make the incidence of postnatal PTSD unnaturally high.

Working to the put the pre and post natal needs of women in the spotlight, it is hoped that the BTA can reduce the incidence of PTSD and, in the process, promote better maternity care in the UK, leading to fewer incidents of birth injury and less scope for medical negligence claims.

Helping fathers
The BTA is also committed to helping fathers who are affected by their partners suffering postnatal PTSD.

They offer advice and support as well as forums for similarly affected fathers to share their pain and experience.
