Having effective maternity systems is one way hospitals can better manage births, the health of newborn babies, reduce the birth injury claim rate and, ultimately, the cost of medical negligence compensation cover.
Indeed, the cost of such systems to the NHS runs into the billions and, as such, has sometimes come in for intense criticism, with some critics arguing that, far from saving money, time and labour, they have actually increased red-tape and administration while swallowing valuable hospital funds.
Baby barcodes are just one aspect of NHS computer systems. Although they might sound like something from a science-fiction nightmare, they simply replace old-fashioned hand-written tags and the hope is that they will actually improve the safety of maternity services and prevent birth injury claims from arising in the future.
Kettering General Hospital was the first hospital in the UK to introduce the barcodes and was soon followed by Northampton General Hospital; maternity staff from both hospitals said they hoped that the barcodes would help eliminate errors caused by illegible handwriting.
The information and technology project manager from Kettering General Hospital said that "the new system is quicker and safer because the bar-coded information can be quickly read by the computers without the possibility of human transcription errors."
While Gail Johnson, education and professional development adviser at Royal College of Midwifery, backs baby barcodes, " This is about making sure the right information is shared," she said.
Adding, "It makes it safer so there can be no mistakes and streamlines the service. If you have got to write out numbers four or five times there is the potential for mistakes. But if you have got it in a bar code you get rid of mistakes and eradicate human error."
