Although Erbs palsy is a distressing and potentially-disabling condition, this birth injury does not have to restrict the activities of a victim if suitable treatment is started early enough and continued.
An example of the ability to overcome disablement was made public in December 2010 when a 17-year-old apprentice whose right arm was paralysed at birth achieved promotion only six months into his training in business administration with an estate agents in Billingham, Cleveland.
The young man told his local newspaper that he was looking for a practical career and training because he did not feel college was for him and was pleased to be taken on as an apprentice. His boss said that he was enthusiastic and a hard worker.
The teenager was also a keen rugby player and said that he did not allow the birth accident to affect his progress in sport or his career.
"My advice to anyone in a similar position, who is looking to do an apprenticeship, is not to let a disability hold you back," he said.
It is not known what treatments, if any, the young man was offered when he was younger but the paralysis is usually due to the upper group of the arm's main nerves being badly damaged or even severed during birth.
In mild instances of shoulder dystocia, the baby may recover spontaneously from the brachial plexus injury or simple physiotherapy may be sufficient to increase mobility of the limb.
For more severe cases, a child may require surgery and three types of operation are commonly available.
These are: nerve transfers (usually from the opposite leg); sub scapularis releases, which involve cutting into the arm muscle to increase stretch; latissumus dorsi tendon transfers where part of the muscle is attached to the bicep.
Although Erb's palsy may not be a life-threatening condition, if it has been caused during a birth accident through the actions of a health professional, there may be a case for making a compensation claim for the personal injury caused.
