Injury during birth caused by hypoxic-ischemic insult

One of the more common circumstances which may cause injury during birth is when the supply of oxygen is curtailed to the baby during delivery. In some cases this will be referred to as a hypoxic-ischemic insult which may lead to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

Brain injury terminology

Encephalopathy - any brain disease, damage or malfunction.

Hypoxia - a relative lack of oxygen is known as a hypoxic insult.

Anoxia - a total lack of oxygen.

Ischemic insult - a lack of blood flow to the brain.

So, a hypoxic-ischemic insult resulting in encephalopathy is a partial lack of oxygen to the brain which results in brain damage.

Like traumatic brain injury, where damage is caused by impact, hypoxic-ischemic birth injuries can vary from very mild to very severe and if the oxygen deprivation is prolonged or total it can result in death.

In babies, hypoxic-ischemic insult may lead to conditions such as cerebral palsy, physical disability and learning disabilities.

Where injury during birth has caused severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in an infant the mortality rate is reportedly 25-50%. Multiple organ failure is most usually the cause of death and most deaths occur in the first week after delivery.

In most countries with technologically advanced labour care for expectant mothers the incidence of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is 1-8 cases per 1000 births.
