Summary of potential birth injuries

If a newborn suffers a birth injury, the day which was meant to bring happiness to a family can instead bring trauma and stress.

The negligence of one or more medical professionals at a stage of life where humans are arguably at their most fragile can result in life-changing damage to what would have been a healthy baby. Consequently, this may lead to a compensation claim being made to ease the financial hardship of medical costs, care and specialist equipment.

Spinal cord birth injury

Together with the brain, the spinal cord makes up the body's central nervous system. Damage to the cord can result in an infant being unable to move one or more of its limbs or suffering complete paralysis, and may leave it incapable of sensation due to nerve ending damage.

Some function may be regained after some weeks, and occasionally up to two years after the injury, but as of yet there is no cure for this type of damage.

Brachial plexus birth injury

This relatively common injury occurs when a baby's shoulders are moved in such a way during birth that the brachial plexus, a network of nerves which takes care of shoulder, arm and hand movements and sensations, is torn or otherwise damaged.

This can cause impaired mobility and loss of sensation in one or both arms. In the most severe cases brachial plexus injury can result in paralysis of the shoulder, arm and hand. Although many such mild injuries heal by themselves over time, more severe cases may require surgery.

Fracture injury at birth

The delivery process can be difficult, and if medical staff do not perform their tasks correctly this may result in the newborn suffering a fractured collar bone, which can have an impact on movement in the arms and neck until healed.

If diagnosed, and treated, quickly and correctly there should be no adverse affects to the baby as they grow up. If you would like to read more about fractures during birth, please click here.

Brain trauma birth injury

A traumatic brain injury is a brain injury indirectly caused by an initial case of medical negligence, such as the baby being starved of oxygen due to a failure to deliver the baby expeditiously.

The effects can be devastating and it is the civil right of the parents to make a claim for their newborn's injury. If you would like to learn more about this type of birth injury, please click here.
