Birth injury lawyers likely to act on fewer cerebral palsy cases

Cerebral palsy is one of the most common medical conditions for which a UK birth injury lawyer may be called on to help a family achieve justified compensation for their suffering and the financial consequences of bringing up a disabled child.

The causes of this type of brain injury are not fully understood but can often occur as a result of the baby being starved of oxygen either immediately before or after birth.

Problems resulting from cerebral palsy can range from mild learning difficulties to a severe lack of mobility and use of limbs.

However, it seems that, distressing though cerebral palsy may be for parents and victims of the condition, rates of its occurrence are declining in Europe and North America. The severity of resulting injuries has also reduced.

Researchers in the Netherlands, who looked at the cases of 3,000 babies born prematurely between 1990 and 2005, found that there had been a 6% decline in the number of instances of cerebral palsy compared with the previous three years.

They found that a particular type of brain injury, white matter lesions, had become far less prevalent and this appeared to be why the cerebral palsy rate was falling. However, the scientists could not suggest a reason for this occurrence.

Tests to try to establish why the condition has declined included analysing Caesarean section deliveries, foetal monitoring and birth drugs, including antibiotics.

However, none of this research has come up with a definitive reason for the decrease in white matter lesions and the consequent drop in cerebral palsy related to that problem.

The lead researcher on the Netherlands study concluded that probably the best answer as to why this birth injury had reduced so dramatically was that care of babies before and immediately after birth had improved generally.

This scientist's words are encouraging for all parents who look forward to having a healthy child delivered but, unfortunately, will be of little comfort to those who already have had the distressing experience of their baby suffering a birth accident resulting in a permanent disability.

In some cases, no amount of medical intervention or pre-warning of a potential problem can prevent a baby being born with disabilities but in other circumstances where there has been neglect by doctors or nurses or where a difficulty should have been foreseen, there may be grounds for a compensation claim to be made.

Although money cannot repair a child's damaged brain or body, it can help to provide the best practical comforts and assistance for the victim and their family to live the most fulfilling life possible.

YouClaim offers a birth injury lawyer service

Due to the sensitive and complicated nature of most accidents involving new-borns, it is important for parents to instruct the best-possible birth injury lawyer in order to maximise the amount of damages they are likely to receive in order to provide for the victim's lifetime needs.

YouClaim has solicitors available throughout the UK to give advice to parents of sufferers of cerebral palsy and other brain injuries. They have an excellent record of achieving compensation where liability by the NHS or other health professionals is proved.

Although a claim involving a child can be started at any time before he or she reaches the age of 18, in view of the high costs of looking after a disabled person, it is best to consult an experienced personal injury lawyer at the earliest possible opportunity.

We have a reputation for communicating effectively and clearly with our claimants, helping them to achieve justified compensation efficiently wherever they live in the UK.
