Caput succedaneum and birth injury fears

When a child is born, anything unusual can give the new parents fear of a birth injury, but some symptoms, while scary, need not lead to significant worry. One such example is caput succedaneum.

This is a recognised birth trauma, in which a liquid-filled swelling is formed on the baby's head by pressure against the cervix. It is described as being a 'boggy' swelling, or one without clear boundaries, and can be associated with a degree of head moulding and headache pain.

However, the good news is that in most cases the only treatment needed is observation, perhaps with a little analgesia if the child appears to be suffering with headaches. The swelling may disguise a cephalohaematoma, which has distinct borders and may feel like a small water balloon beneath the skin, but this too should be simply observed and allowed to recede naturally.

Unwarranted activity, which may include draining these swellings with a needle, may in fact be what leads to a birth injury claim, as it may be possible to show medical negligence of the risks of infection that such an operation could expose the infant to.

However, there are rare cases where caput succedaneum or a cephalohaematoma may hide a more serious problem, perhaps involving brain trauma, skull fracture or a leptomeningeal cyst. If it can be shown that an infant has suffered personal injury as a result of one of these conditions being worsened through medical inaction or incorrect action, it may indeed be possible to pursue birth injury compensation.
