Coping after birth trauma may involve many different methods and means, and all couples differ in the care they will require. If you or your baby has been injured, it is possible you will need ongoing medical support, and if you have been psychologically affected you might choose to receive counselling.
You may also wish to find out how and why your labour was mishandled, and whether or not the health care staff, whose care you were under, were negligent. If medical negligence is proved to have played a part in your traumatic birth, then you may also wish to pursue a claim for compensation, as a damages award could help with the cost of ongoing treatment or for providing much needed respite care.
The Birth Trauma Association is very interested in how couples cope after a difficult labour and often run research groups and studies that look at many aspects of recovery from birth injuries and the long lasting mental affects associated with complications during labour.
These research studies can help in two ways: firstly, by talking to families who have experienced birth trauma so the health service and aftercarers can offer greater understanding and a better informed package of care.
Secondly, it may even help couples who have suffered birth injury to come to terms with their experience and may leave them feeling better knowing that by sharing their experience they have hopefully helped to stop the tragic recurrence of mismanaged labour.
For details of research programmes being undertaken and news of other relevant information visit the Birth Trauma Association website.
