You could be forgiven for expecting maternity care in the London, one of the world's great cities, to be uniformly world-class. The statistics for birth injury litigation however, would seem to indicate that the reality of maternity standards in the capital is far from flawless.
In 2009, Freedom of Information disclosures revealed that every NHS trust in the capital had paid out obstetric compensation settlements totalling six or more figures.
Indeed, birth injury payouts accounted for more than a third of London's NHS compensation bill, £27 million of £73.6 million.
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust represented the high end of the scale, paying out a total of £4 million in obstetric claims, nearly half its medical negligence bill.
Imperial College Healthcare was another NHS Trust with a larger than average bill, with maternity claims accounting for £3.3 million of an £8.2 million bill.
However, an NHS Litigation Authority spokeswoman warned that it would be misguided to read too much into the figures. "Larger trusts and those which provide more complex treatments are more likely to receive claims than smaller trusts or those providing low-risk care," she said.
And with several hundred no win, no fee claims still pending, the prognosis for maternity care in the capital does not look like improving any time soon.
