Every year in Britain at least 50 mothers will die while giving birth – it is a tragedy that is compounded by the fact that in many cases, the death happens as a result of avoidable negligence.
Although a birth injury lawyer can not turn back the clock and take away the pain and grief of loss, compensation can help ensure that bereaved families are able to build the best possible future, however tragic the circumstances.
Avoidable deaths in London
In 2011 a BBC Panorama investigation revealed that over an 18-month period in London there were at least 42 deaths of women in maternity care.
Furthermore, the same investigation revealed that 17 of these deaths were avoidable.
Many of those families affected decided to instruct birth injury lawyers to pursue maternity negligence compensation, while both midwives and hospital chiefs responded by saying that lessons had be learned.
Professor Trish Morris-Thompson, NHS London's chief nurse and herself a practicing midwife, commented, "There were a number of opportunities to prevent death occurring and because of that, we have taken enough action across the organisations in London and we will continue to do so to put right those actions."
The pressure on midwives
Although a proportion of the deaths were caused by failures by individual midwives, the majority of the problems could be attributed to endemic pressure on the midwifery profession – something which needs to be addressed for lasting change to be effected.
A spokeswoman with the Royal College of Midwives comments, "The problem I think for midwives now is that the pressure is relentless and none of us can keep our standards as high as they should be if day after day we're working under extreme pressure."
