The WHO suggests a C-section rate of no more than 10 to 15 percent. In England, over 2006/07 and 2007/08 the rate was 24.6 percent in both years.

The figures, supplied by the NHS Information Centre, revealed that pregnant women cared for by the Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust are more than twice as likely to deliver by C-section than women cared for by the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Northampton.
Chelsea had the highest English rate of Caesarean section with 33.3 percent of its babies born by this method, whilst the 15.8 percent of C-section deliveries in Northampton was the lowest.
Chelsea's high rate may have been exacerbated by the fact that its numbers of elective Caesarean deliveries, where the procedure is planned rather than performed as a medical emergency, were the highest in the country at 15.8 percent.
However, the Peterborough and Stamford NHS Foundation Trust was found to perform only 5.6% of babies by elective Caesarean section.
