Birth injury lawyer could help after illness from Caesarean section infection

When people think of birth injury lawyers they may not necessarily realise that these compensation claim experts can also help after a mother has suffered an injury.

Whether the personal injury has been sustained during the pregnancy, while the mother is in labour, or after the birth, hospital staff will have had a duty of care towards the parent as well as the new infant.

One injury which can occur is an internal or external infection after having a Caesarean section.

Symptoms of external infection
It is usual for a Caesarean scar to feel itchy as nerve endings heal, but this may also be sign of the beginning of an infection.

If the scar also feels raw and tender and is expelling puss or has become red, swollen and painful, medical staff should administer some antibiotics to counteract the illness.

Generally once the mother has been given drugs for the infection it should clear without any further problems. While the infection clears the scar should be kept clean and dry.

Symptoms of internal infection
Whereas external infections are relatively easy to cure and do not usually put a mother's life in danger, internal infections pose much more of a health risk.

If the wound has started to smell bad or has become progressively more swollen, red and painful to touch, or if the woman's abdomen feels harder than usual, this is a sign that she may be suffering from an internal infection.

Similarly, if the mother develops flu-like symptoms and a lot of discharge is coming from the wound a doctor or midwife should recognise these as warnings of illness, although a little discharge when the scar has just started to heal is usually normal and nothing to be concerned about.

If an internal infection is not diagnosed early enough it could spread to internal organs and the mother's health may deteriorate rapidly. In very serious cases this type of infection can be fatal.

Birth injury lawyers can help after new mother falls ill
If you, or your partner, have been unfortunate enough to suffer the stress and pain of an undiagnosed Caesarean section infection, we could help you win damages.

Hospital staff should be trained in recognising the symptoms of infection. Failure on the part of the hospital management to have their staff trained correctly or medical negligence on the part of a doctor or midwife is unacceptable.
