Reducing the risk of cerebral palsy, and how to make a claim

Giving birth is often considered to be one of the most natural and beautiful events parents can experience, yet labour is unpredictable and sometimes women do not receive the best care possible. This can result in people having to seek a birth injury lawyer to claim compensation for an injury which could have been avoided.

Cerebral palsy is a wide term doctors use to describe a set of neurological conditions which can affect a child's movement and coordination. There are several types of cerebral palsy and it usually occurs during pregnancy, or during or soon after birth.

Possible causes of the condition can include: an infection in early pregnancy, a premature or difficult birth, abnormal brain development in the baby and bleeding in the baby's brain.

Cerebral palsy is not that common, it is estimated that 1 in 400 children are affected by the condition and approximately 1,800 babies are diagnosed with it every year.

Unfortunately, most cases of cerebral palsy cannot be prevented, however, a mother can try to minimise the risk of complications during pregnancy and giving birth.

Expectant mothers should ensure that all their vaccinations are up to date and attend all of their antenatal appointments. Pregnant women should also avoid drinking alcohol or smoking as these are known causes of premature birth which can carry the risk of cerebral palsy.

Exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet boosts the immune system which in turn reduces the risk of a pregnant woman sustaining an infection.

If a child does suffer from cerebral palsy, the condition will not get any worse as the child grows older as it is not a progressive condition. However, problems can be caused in later life due to the great deal of strain the condition can have on the body.

Although there is currently no cure for cerebral palsy, a range of treatments are available to relieve a child's symptoms which can improve their confidence and sense of independence.
