Hip dysplasia in newborns and young babies

Regardless of how smoothly a pregnancy may go, giving birth can carry many complications which may cause a birth injury to the baby or mother. If an injury has been caused due to someone else's negligence, parents may seek a birth injury lawyer to help them make a compensation claim.

Hip dysplasia, also known as Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip or clicky hips, is an abnormality in the shape of the hip joint which stems from birth or early childhood. Although severe abnormalities are usually diagnosed early on, milder forms are not always noticed until symptoms occur years later.

The condition is the most common developmental hip deformity which causes symptoms in adults and also frequently causes osteoarthritis in the hips.

The hip consists of a ball and socket joint, however, the joint does not always develop properly. If the ball does not lie in the socket properly, the ball slips in and out of place or the socket has formed so that it is shallow and the hip dislocates easily, then a child can develop problems when they start to walk.

Girls are more likely to suffer hip dysplasia than boys – as are breech babies, babies who have not had much space to kick in the womb, babies who were born overdue and also babies from families known to have suffered from the condition.

However, the causes of hip dysplasia are not always known and a doctor or midwife will check for the condition straight after a baby has been delivered.

If any instability in the baby's leg movements is observed, the examiner will further investigate with methods such as an ultrasound scan – x-rays are sometimes used on older babies. More hip tests will be taken during a baby's six and eight month checks.

Hip dysplasia recognised early on can be treated with a splint worn by the baby for six to 12 weeks which keeps the baby's hips in the correct position to help them develop properly.
Doctors may also need to treat hip dysplasia with traction, in which weights or gravity are used to encourage the hip into the socket, or even by making a small incision to release tendons into the groin.
