A great deal has been written about the need to "normalise" childbirth. Exactly what this entails however, can be a controversial issue, as has been evidenced in Scotland recently, where a decision to scrap all pregnant women's basic antenatal checks with a GP in favour of direct appointments with midwives has raised birth injury fears.
GPs have voiced their "anger and frustration" at the move, claiming that they are better qualified than midwives to identify complications.
Scottish GP Jim Cowan comments, "We are being sidelined. We feel we are being excluded from this important part of a woman's medical history. There seems to be a desire to hive off that bit to midwifery and keep GPs out of it."There may well be a holistic benefit from seeing a doctor. You may well be able to offer advice and discuss the pregnancy and the context of that woman's particular life situation."
However, the Royal College of Midwives has dismissed such birth injury fears. Their director, Gillian Smith, said, "I think this is a good piece of work. I think it's the midwives working as a linchpin, and as the first point of contact."
The change is just one part of a new Scottish Government strategy, Keeping Childbirth Natural and Dynamic.
A government spokesperson comments, "Keeping Childbirth Natural and Dynamic aims to ensure women giving birth have as natural an experience as is safely possible."
