An injury during birth can leave a person with life-long disabilities making them reliant on the help of others for help with day-to-day activities such as washing, dressing and eating. This leads many to make a birth injury compensation claim for their injuries to ensure that they can access any specialised equipment or care which they may need.
Erbs Palsy and brachial plexus injury are caused by nerve damage suffered during childbirth and can leave the sufferer with complete paralysis in one arm. The damage is generally caused by shoulder dystocia which can happen during a difficult birth.
While some babies may recover naturally from the injury, some are left with a permanent disability which can severely affect any mobility they have in the affected arm.
In 2010 the family of a girl who was left disabled at birth because of errors made by hospital staff won £100,000 in compensation following a successful birth injury claim.
Due to her mother's gestational diabetes which can make fetuses larger than normal, the girl had to be delivered using a "corkscrew" method which displaced the girl's right shoulder. This consequently left the girl unable to use her right arm.
Poole Hospital, where the girl was born, apologised to the family for their daughter's birth injury and said that the training of doctors had been "strengthened" since the girl's birth.
Speaking of her daughter's birth injury, the mother said, "She was a bit bigger than a normal baby, her head was delivered normally but her shoulders were too big for my pelvis.
"They used an inappropriate manoeuvre and, when they pulled her, snapped the right-side collarbone."
If you or your baby have suffered a birth injury, you could be eligible for birth injury compensation.
