Many figures within the health services in England believe that the best way to ensure a low rate of birth injury claims is to employ a systematic approach to safety across the nation's maternity services.
One important report that recognises this fact was produced by the King's Fund in 2008. Called Safe Births: Everybody's Business - it sought to analyse trends in maternity services over a number of years and provide guidance to the policymakers of today. Together with the Healthcare Commission's Towards Better Births, it helped establish a strong twin base for the policy decisions of the future.
As a result of findings in the Safe Births report it was announced that professionals from 12 maternity units would form a partnership called the Safer Births Initiative.
By building on local knowledge and promoting a co-ordinated approach the initiative seeks to improve training, communication and staffing. It is a working partnership formed between a number of organisations, including The King's Fund, Royal College of Midwives, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Centre for Maternal and Child Enquiries, NHS Litigation Authority and National Patient Safety Agency, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Royal College of Midwives, Centre for Maternal and Child Enquiries and the NHS Litigation Authority.
The 12 participating maternity units are Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, Barts and The London NHS Trust, South Warwickshire General Hospitals NHS Trust, Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Kingston Hospital NHS Trust, Medway NHS Foundation Trust, Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust, Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust and Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Ultimately, the partnership has one aim: to improve the outcome of every birth in England for both mother and child, while also reducing the cost of birth injury claims for all kinds of conditions, including cerebral palsy, brain injury and Erb's Palsy.
