Cutting the cord and making a birth injury claim

Every parent wishes for a safe delivery of their baby however unfortunately this is not always the case. Even if both mother and baby are perfectly healthy and a normal delivery is experienced, poor post-natal care can lead to medical negligence and a birth injury claim having to be made.

The cutting of the umbilical cord is a symbolic moment during childbirth marking the final physical separation between mother and child. As it is normally a simple procedure, new parents are often allowed to cut the cord themselves.

However in 2010 after the safe delivery of a newborn girl, medical negligence during the cutting of the cord nearly cost new parents their baby daughter's life. While cutting the baby's cord the midwife cut off one of the child's fingers with the scissors she was using.

According to the parents, the midwife was at first oblivious to what she had done and denied harming the child until she was made aware of the blood the injury had caused. The baby girl was immediately rushed from Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital where she was born to Birmingham's Children's Hospital 17 miles away for the finger to be sewn back on.

The 28-year-old mother of Wolverhampton said, "When she cut the eight-inch cord she cut through the finger as well, but didn't even notice at firstIt has caused so much stress to both of us, because when the birth is normal otherwise like ours was then you just don't expect these things to happen."

Following the incident the baby girl had to spend the first few weeks of her life heavily bandaged until her finger recovered from the injury. It is likely that she will need further treatment on the finger as she grows older and she may experience limited function in the digit as a result of the injury.

Speaking of the experience, the father of the injured newborn said, "It's an issue of clinical negligence and has left us both mentally scarred - the whole thing was ludicrous and horrifying.

Medical negligence can leave a person with a permanent disability that may require ongoing treatment and care assistance.
