Birth injury and bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis, normally a relatively benign and asymptomatic condition caused by too few lactobacilli in the vagina, can present problems in pregnancy and in some circumstances may even lead to birth injury.

Also known as BV, it is the most widespread vaginal infection in women of childbearing age. As such, it is thought that as many as 30% of women may develop the infection during pregnancy. Although, for most, this will not result in any complications, for others there may be a risk of birth-related problems.

Preterm labour, miscarriage, uterine infection and preterm rupture of the amniotic membranes (PPROM) are all birth injury related complications that have some links with the presence of bacterial vaginosis.

Obstetric and gynaecological experts debate the efficacy of treating BV in symptomless pregnant women, and American experts say that, for this reason, routine screening for the infection is not worthwhile.

However, here in the UK, experts recommend that both women with symptoms (a grey, white discharge and an unpleasant smell) and women with a history of preterm birth are tested and, where necessary, treated.

It is perfectly possible to treat BV in pregnant women without risking the health of the foetus or newborn.

Treatment takes the form of pregnancy-friendly antibiotics, which will usually be taken orally or by suppository. In the majority of cases, this will clear up the infection. However, three in ten women will have symptoms reoccur within three months. This is due, largely, to difficulties in ensuring the balance between "good" and "bad" bacteria.

Although there is no precedent in case law of women or infants receiving negligence compensation for injury caused by undiagnosed or untreated bacterial vaginosis, it may be worth talking to a good personal injury lawyer if you believe that your child has suffered injury in these circumstances.
