Birth accident solicitors may be interested in Apgar test results
The Apgar score is a medical test that gives a newborn baby a score from 0 to 10. A parent in the sad position of considering a birth accident compensation claim may find their child's recorded Apgar scores may be relevant to the case.
Although it was invented by a Dr Apgar, after whom it is named, her name has been used to create an acronym to mark out the five aspects of the test: Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration. Appearance, for example, refers to the skin colour (a cyanotic baby will have blue skin, and the levels of blueness are measured); Grimace, perhaps the most forced of the initials, refers to the reflex activity of the baby to stimulation.
Each aspect can receive an individual score from 0 to 2, where 0 is dangerous and 2 is healthy. A score of 7 or more suggests an immediately healthy child, and a score below 3 is regarded as critically low.
The score is taken at birth, then at five and ten minutes. It must be emphasised that a low Apgar score does not, by itself, signify that a personal injury has been caused, or that medical negligence has occurred in the birth, but the figures may be a useful factor to a birth injury solicitor in the process of making a compensation claim.
