Gestational diabetes and the increased risk of birth accidents

A birth accident can have a huge impact not just on the life of the child that has suffered the injury, but on the lives of all of their family as well as they adjust to cope with the child's disability.

In 2010, a Welsh family received a six-figure compensation payout after a series of medical mistakes left their baby boy seriously disabled. Due to birth injuries, the boy now suffers from Erb's Palsy which has left him with a permanently disabled left arm.

Erb's Palsy affects the nerves in the arm typically due to an injury to the brachial plexus during a traumatic delivery. The injured boy has already had several operations and faces further operations in the future to help him gain use of his disabled arm.

The birth injury occurred after his mother, who was suffering from gestational diabetes, had trouble delivering her baby naturally due to his large birth weight. Women suffering from gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of having larger babies and so also are at a greater risk of requiring a caesarean section to deliver their baby safely.

Usually women suffering from gestational diabetes are closely monitored as there is an increased risk of complications during birth and there is also a raised risk of birth defects. However, in this case, due to a series of mishaps, the mother did not receive the care she should have which resulted in the injuries to her child.

Staff at the hospital were criticised by Health trust officials at Hywel Dda Health Board for not following "universally accepted" guidelines and procedures for delivering a baby whose shoulders become stuck during delivery.

Commenting on her birth, the mother said, "We were prepared for the fact that he was going to be poorly but we didn't fully understand that he would be in a diabetic coma and we were certainly never told there was a risk of him getting stuck."

She added that the compensation would secure her son's future but would not quell her anger. She decided, with her partner's support, that legal action would not only provide for her son, but would also gain the family answers on how such a fundamental midwifery error could have happened.
